Setting sail: The new TUI river ships

TUI – the group which runs Marella Cruises at sea – has announced it will launch a river service from summer 2020, using three 155-passenger vessels.

The adults-only ships will sail 19 itineraries on the Danube, Rhine, Moselle, Main and Dutch and Belgian waterways, including a 14-night European Icons cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest.

Here’s what we know about the project so far:

The ships

The riverboats, carrying up to 155 passengers each, will be called TUI Isla, TUI Maya and TUI Skyla. Each will have a sun deck (with herb garden and barbecue), an observatory lounge, terrace, main restaurant, bistro and health and wellbeing zone.

The cabins

There will be standard cabins and standard single cabins the same size (12sq metres). The standard has a double bed and desk, the single version has a single bed, desk and lounge chair.

Superior cabins are 15sq metres with a king-size bed that can be converted into two singles, along with a desk and lounge chair.

Cabins on the lowest deck, Deck 1, have a porthole, while those on Decks 2 and 3 come with a full-sized window or French balcony.

Top of the range is a French balcony suite at 24sq metres which includes a bigger bathroom, dressing area, sofa, coffee table and desk.

If you wish to book a particular cabin, reservations cost £48 per room.
