I’ll be aboard the exciting new Norwegian Breakaway as it sails from Rotterdam on Sunday for inaugural celebrations in Southampton next week. Follow my tweets on @shipmonk.

Here are some key facts and figures about the New York-themed ship:

  • £520million cost
  • 144,000 tonnes
  • 4,000 passengers
  • Five multi-storey waterslides with a total length of 400 metres
  • 40mph – the speed you drop down Free Fall, the fastest waterslide at sea
  • 8ft – the distance over the side of the ship of The Plank. Dare you walk it?
  • 5ft 7in – height of the life-size statue of SpongeBob SquarePants
  • Three – number of storeys in sports complex
  • 40 features on ropes course, including a zip track
  • Nine holes on miniature golf course
  • Two-deck youth area called Splash Academy
  • 2,000sq metres of spa and fitness facilities with 22 treatment rooms
  • 400-metre long Waterfront dining area
  • 28 dining options
  • Three live Broadway shows including Rock Of Ages

Douglas Ward, author of The Berlitz Guide to Cruise Ships, said: ‘Breakaway really is for the young and trendy. It will provide families with children, single parents, couples and solo travellers with a mountain of entertainment choices in an environment that is a pure playground for an active, entertaining, cruise.’
