Andrew Hall, the liner’s master, accepted the 2024 Ship of the Year Award from the Steamship Historical Society of America.

Mr Payne was given the 2024 Samuel Ward Stanton Award for Lifetime Achievement by the same organisation to recognise the work he has done to encourage young people to have ambition and aim high.

The ceremony was held in the onboard Commodore Club shortly before the ship set sail from New York for Southampton. The two awards were then displayed outside the champagne bar.

Queen Mary 2, the only liner still operating in the world, entered service in 2004, meaning she has crossed the Atlantic an average of 20 times a year.
